I’ve found Windows XP Pro 圆4 bit works best if you want to run Windows, and Red Hat 4.0 Advanced Server screams in the VM with enough memory.Įnough introduction, here are the steps. They actually do work on Vista but I’ve heard the new Vista license agreements may prohibit their use on Mac OS X in a VM. ![]() If you have 4GBs of memory, they all work fine. Unless you require Java or User Defined Object Types (UDTs) inside your development instance, I’d recommend you install Oracle Database 10g Express Edition on a MacBook or MacBook Pro when you have 2GBs of memory or less. You can run Oracle Database 10gR1 on a G5 (PowerPC 970) processor (a detail I apparently missed in the installation notes on the Oracle Technical Network), but why do that? You can run Oracle Database 10gR2, Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, or Oracle Database 11g in a virtual machine on a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Mac Pro. Oddly, the few distracting Java errors that SQL*Developer raises on a PC don’t get raised on the Mac OS X.Īt present, Oracle databases don’t run natively on Mac OS X with an Intel processor. You’ll be able to run SQL*Plus from the Mac OS command-line, SQL*Developer natively in Mac OS, and Oracle Enterprise Manager in Mac browser (of your choosing). The virtual machine should be a background process, whether it is a Linux, Windows XP Pro or Vista instance. The best thing about working on a MacBook or MacBook Pro is working on it, not working on the VMWare Fusion instance. The shoes and mittens are leaf shaped for the final touches. The show also takes a very modern turn, with George Michael starting an "anti-social network" and everything from Skype to the BlackBerry PlayBook making noteworthy cameos. The Arrested Development world is bigger than ever, with new model homes, dorm rooms, high-end prisons, bizarre restaurants, and desert sweat lodges in which our many protagonists spend their time. Nearly everything's here, except as best I can tell no one ever said "There's always money in the banana stand" and there's only the slightest hint of a chicken dance. F reference you'd miss if you were breathing too loudly at the time. ![]() There are callbacks everywhere, from the Mr. and his identical twin Oscar spend a lot of time together, a Jeffrey-Tambor-on-Jeffrey-Tambor dynamic I wish we'd seen more of before. George Michael’s hyper-religious ex-girlfriend Ann Veal comes back with a vengeance, somehow still delightfully insignificant even in a much-expanded role. (That one respite was thanks to the re-introduction of the casual racism Arrested Development does so well.) There are too many flashbacks, too much re-introduction, too much time spent essentially saying "OMG you guys can you believe they cancelled us?"īut slowly over the next few episodes, the show finds its footing again, as it re-introduces so many of the characters and jokes that made it famous. I laughed out loud exactly once during those three episodes, and nearly gave up watching the show entirely - the first 90 minutes of season four felt longer than the next six hours. otherwise he's going to have to Skype me from a TGI Friday's." Netflix's bumper is ugly, odd, and cloying, pointing out that it's only a "semi-original series." Then for the next three episodes, from Ron Howard's narratorial throat-clearing to the "Showstealer Pro Trial Version" watermark splashed over footage from old seasons, Arrested Development is hell-bent on reminding us that it was cancelled seven years ago. I hated season four from the second it started. It doesn't really matter, though - it's just a loose thread tying everyone together, and we're probably better off not tugging too hard at it. There’s a core conflict running through the whole season, but it’s perpetually shifting and confusing, and I found myself constantly having to pause the show to remember why Michael ended up in this restaurant, or why he’s pretending he doesn’t know Lindsay. I, for one, am happy about that fact.Įvery new episode revolves around a single character, guiding us on an inevitably winding and interconnecting journey through their last seven years. In 2006, you'd sneeze and a half-dozen jokes would be missed and gone into Fox's ether now they're here for us, forever. ![]() It’s tailor-made for the DVR era and especially for Netflix - the episodes were to be viewable in any order, available all at once for infinite re-watching, rewinding, sharing, and dissecting. ![]() I fully support both decisions, and when the show's 15 new episodes finally became available on May 26th, I bailed on my family’s Memorial Day activities, hunkered down in front of my TV on a gorgeous day in New York City, and watched every single one.Įveryone’s talked about how Arrested Development was always designed for 2013 - the show was so fast, so smart, and so dense, and without a way to pause or rewind, often too much. Years, even - there's a part of me that's convinced CEO Reed Hastings added Instant Streaming to Netflix just so we could all re-watch the show, then started producing original content just so he could bring it back. I've been waiting for Arrested Development to arrive on Netflix for months. "Family first unless there's a work thing." "It's like you always say," George Michael tells his dad. I prefer the clamp option, as it holds both hoops and frames. Options include a clamp, scroll frame, and q-snap heads. It is sold in separate parts, so you have to purchase the stand itself, and then the type of “head” you want on the stand to hold your work. This is an all-steel, front-facing stand, but with the extra extension arm, it can also be situated from the side. Needlework System 4: I’ve been using this floor stand for about 15 years it’s my go-to floor stand. Parts & Construction: Is it made with quality parts that are easy to tighten and adjust when need be? Do all the parts fit together and move as they should, without rubbing or sticking? Popular Brands of Floor Stands Balance: Is the floor stand engineered to hold large frames and even attachable accessories (like magnifiers or lights, chart holders, tool trays) without becoming top heavy and toppling?ģ. Take into consideration, too, whether or not you want the stand in front of you or to the side, with the work extending over your lap.Ģ. Extension & adjustability: Does it offer enough extension and can it be adjusted in various ways so that it reaches you comfortably in your favorite spot for sitting? If you sit, for example, in a recliner, some floor stands won’t work for you. When it comes to choosing one, you want to look for the following:ġ. There are many manufacturers of floor stands out there! And there are many good ones on the market. You can pretty much set up a floor stand anywhere it will fit, and the only thing you need to bring to it is a chair and your stitching stuff.Ī floor stand rests in front or to the side of you and holds your needlework frame or hoop up in front of you while you stitch. ![]() The benefit of a floor stand is that it is independent of you and it is independent of any furniture around you. We can look at other options down the road, but because the floor stand is usually a fairly hefty investment that requires a bit of pondering, it makes sense to focus on it first. Today, we’re looking at the Floor Stand, specifically. There are sit-on stands, that can serve as a table-top stand as well.Īnd there are trestles, which are the “big guns” of large needlework frame supports. There are clamp-on stands, that clamp onto a table top. There are lap and table top stands, which rest either on your lap or on a table top in front of you. There are floor stands, which stand independently on the floor. When it comes to stands that hold your embroidery hoop or frame for you, there are essentially five types that can do the trick: Today, let’s navigate through the world of needlework stands together! We’ll talk about different types of devices to hold needlework, we’ll discuss the benefits of a floor stand, we’ll chat about what to look for in a good needlework stand, and we’ll explore some of the popular floor stands on the market today. Or perhaps you have a stand you’re not thoroughly satisfied with? If you haven’t reached the point of using a stand, but if stitching has become a major part of your creative life, chances are, you’ll eventually consider one. Wrist, arm, neck and back strain finger and hand cramps strange sitting positions to balance large frames awkward stitching when you need to use both hands – all of these are things of the past, when you have a needlework stand! Or, in today’s terms, you could think of a needlework stand as a “third party app” that really does make things work better! One tool that dedicated stitchers eventually invest in is the needlework stand – a device that holds a frame or a hoop so that you don’t have to! It is essentially a third hand (or pair of hands) that leaves your own two hands free to stitch. What would life in the stitching world be without the tools that make needlework easier, more comfortable, and more efficient? More monorail until it dwindled down to bare ground, mud and water. It was the same cautious hike over the deteriorating monorail, back up to Mount Liberty removing our microspikes then putting them back on for the trip down the other side. I've seen plenty of gray jays do this but never a chickadee.Īfter spending some time on the summit we put our microspikes back on and started our return trip over the same trails we had just come from. That was the first time I had ever seen a chickadee land on a hand. I did reward the chickadee with a nut the next time it landed. There was a very friendly chickadee that landed on my open hand even without any food. We were again presented with spectacular views. ![]() The summit was bare and we removed the microspikes. We dropped down into the col and up to the summit of Mount Flume. It was a variety of conditions and the threat of postholing was in every step we took. There were sections of good, solid, monorail and sections of broken, deteriorated monorail. ![]() A step to the side meant sliding off the monorail and even worse postholing into very deep snow. Care had to be taken to stay in the middle of the monorail. Shortly after descending from the summit we were back in our microspikes tackling the monorail. Larry decided that one summit was enough for him today and he turned back as we departed for Flume. We stopped for lunch before moving on to Mount Flume. Up on the summit it was a comfortably cool, beautiful day with spectacular views in every direction. Just before reaching the summit of Mount Liberty the snow was completely gone and we removed our microspikes. Further up we turned south onto the Franconia Ridge Trail. There was lots of snow when we passed by Liberty Spring Tentsite. At first it was sporadic but became continuous and we eventually had to put on our microspikes. At about 1.5 miles the first remnants of a monorail appeared on the trail. The boots got wet but the feet stayed dry. It would require that we step on submerged rocks. We arrived at our first significant water crossing and took a few moments to plot our path. Rock hopping allowed us to keep our feet dry. There were sections of the trail that were very wet with flowing water. The snow is gone down low except for an occasional patch here and there in the woods. There was a noticeable herd path that was easily followed to the Liberty Spring Trail. There is a log across a small brook that marks the beginning of the bushwhack. We departed the parking lot onto the paved bike path and made our way down to the bushwhack. Not knowing what kind of trail conditions we would encounter it was collectively decided that we would carry our snowshoes just in case of deep soft snow. We met at the northbound Basin parking lot. I was expecting a challenge and hoping for a tolerable hike. ![]() So I would be joining Jill, Larry, Scott and Lisa for a hike into a variety of trail conditions. That would explain the low number of hikers on the trails this time of year. Warm temperatures, rain and deep snow present difficult trail conditions for Spring hiking. Weather: Cool to Warm temps, cloudy to partly cloudy with a good dose of sunshine Trail conditions: Bare ground, wet, mud, firm monorail and unconsolidated monorail with deep snow off the side of the monorail Trail route: Basin Bushwhack, Liberty Spring Trail, Franconia Ridge Trail Great for archiving or off-line editing, record MP4 or MOV files to any drive.
